Vesivaroja ja -infrastruktuuria käytetään strategisina kohteina ja niiden hallintaa voimataktiikkana aseellisissa selkkauksissa. Samaan aikaan oikeudenmukainen ja kestävä vesivarojen hallinta voi toimia yhteistyön ja rauhanrakentamisen alustana. Maailman vesipäivän teemana vuonna 2024 on Water for Peace – Vesi rauhan vipuvartena. Teema on erittäin ajankohtainen niin maailmalla kuin myös meillä Suomessa, sillä edistämme aktiivisesti rauhaa vesiyhteistyön ja diplomatian avulla.

Suomen vesiyhdistys yhteistyössä ulkoministeriön ja Vesidiplomatian yhteishankkeen kanssa järjestää perinteisen Maailman vesipäivä seminaarin 22.3.2024 klo 12 alkaen. Tilaisuus järjestetään Tieteiden talolla ja tilaisuutta on mahdollisuus seurata myös etänä.

Seminaarissa tarkastelemme vesiyhteistyön ja -diplomatian mahdollisuuksia rauhan edistämisessä ja konfliktien ehkäisyssä. Seminaarin ohjelma tarjoaa oivalluksia ja konkreettisia ajankohtaisia esimerkkejä veteen liittyvien konfliktien ratkaisemisesta. Kuulemme myös vesidiplomatian merkityksestä ja kansainvälisten vesisopimusten roolista.

Suomen Vesiyhdistyksen tunnustukset ja palkinnot

Water resources and water infrastructure are used as strategic targets, and their control as a power tactic in armed conflicts. Meanwhile, fair and well-governed management of water resources can serve as a platform for cooperation and peacebuilding. Water can act as the starting point for preventive and proactive mediation and as a catalyst for peace. This year, the World Water Day will focus on Water for Peace. The theme is highly relevant for Finland, too, as we are actively promoting peace through water cooperation and diplomacy.

On this World Water Day, 22 March 2024, we invite you to the seminar on Leveraging Water for Peace, organised by the Water Association Finland together with the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland and the project Water Cooperation and Peace – Finnish Water Way. The seminar will begin at 12 o’clock in Tieteiden talo (Kirkkokatu 6, Helsinki), and it will also be livestreamed for online participants.

The seminar will give an opportunity to explore the potential of water cooperation and water diplomacy for peace promotion and conflict prevention. The programme of the seminar will provide us insights to topical examples of solving water-related conflicts, and we will also hear about the importance of water diplomacy and the role of international water conventions.
